In her own words. Masuda left Afghanistan in the summer of 2024 and starts college this fall.
My name is Masuda. I am 20 years old and was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. I left my home country, Afghanistan, in the summer of 2024 to begin a new chapter in the United States. After the Taliban took over Afghanistan, women were banned from attending schools higher than sixth grade. I was in tenth grade at that time when I had to stop and look for another way to continue my education. I was fortunate enough to be able to make my way through those days, living under the oppressive government of the Taliban, and was able to travel to the United States. Now I have just graduated from high school and will go to college this fall. Senior year had been full of unforgettable memories and opportunities that I would have never been able to have under the Taliban dictatorship. As a woman who once was deprived of education herself, I understand how vital women’s education is to the world, and I hope to be someone who conveys that understanding to others.
